Καλησπέρα! Υποθέτω ότι η Ευρωπαϊκή σας tour έχει ήδη ξεκινήσει. Πρέπει να σας βρίσκω κάπου στη Γερμανία τώρα… σωστά;
Έχετε δώσει 4-5 shows μέχρι τώρα. Είναι μέχρι στιγμής όπως το περιμένατε να είναι;
Σε τρεις περίπου εβδομάδες επισκέπτεστε της χώρα μας για δύο συναυλίες. Πρώτη φορά στην Ελλάδα παρά το γεγονός ότι πρόκειται για την τρίτη σας περιοδεία στην Ευρώπη. Υπήρξαν προτάσεις να μας επισκεφτείτε νωρίτερα ή είναι η πρώτη φορά;
Τέσσερα albums σε μία δεκαετία. Αρκετά εντυπωσιακό θα έλεγα. Μήπως είναι καιρός για νέες μουσικές από τους Sasquatch μιας που το τελευταίο album σας κυκλοφόρησε πριν από σχεδόν δυόμιση χρόνια; Ίσως μετά την τρέχουσα περιοδεία; Υπάρχει κάτι στα σκαριά;
Πολύ συχνά σας αποκαλούν ως μια stoner μπάντα. Συμφωνείτε με αυτό τον όρο; ΟΚ, σας αρέσουν τα 70’s. Και σε ποιον δεν αρέσουν. Αλλά πρέπει κάθε μπάντα που ακούγεται σαν τα 70’s να την αποκαλούν stoner;
Μια και ανέφερα τα 70’s… ποιες είναι οι μπάντες που επηρέασαν τον ήχο σας;
Keith: Πέρα από τις προφανείς… ακούω πολύ The Faces, Yes, Peter Frampton, Steely Dan, Kiss, Pink Floyd…
Όλα αυτά τα χρόνια η Smallstone είναι το σπίτι σας. Μια πολύ σημαντική εταιρία για τον συγκεκριμένο ήχο, όχι μόνο στις Η.Π.Α. αλλά και παγκοσμίως. Πριν καμιά δεκαριά χρόνια όταν έψαχνα για νέες μουσικές σε αυτό τον ήχο, η Smallstone ήταν πάντα εκεί. Κάπως έτσι ανακάλυψα και τους Sasquatch. Είναι σημαντικό για μία μπάντα να βρίσκεται σε ένα label, το οποίο έχει καλή φήμη και είναι γνωστό για τις ποιοτικές του κυκλοφορίες;
Keith:Δεν ξέρω…
Cas:Όχι.
Πριν από μερικά χρόνια η Smallstone υπέγραψε τους δικούς μας heavy rock ήρωες, Nightstalker. Έχετε υπόψιν σας άλλες Ελληνικές μπάντες;
Cas: Έχω τον δίσκο των Nightstalker (“Dead Rock Commandos”).
Τα τελευταία χρόνια ο ήχος των 70’s έχει επιστρέψει για τα καλά. Πάρα πολλές μπάντες, είτε Αμερικάνικες, είτε Ευρωπαϊκές, κυκλοφορούν καταπληκτικές δουλειές, είτε είναι heavy rock, είτε psychedelic rock, είτε blues rock. Έχετε κάποια εξήγηση για το γεγονός αυτό;
***ENGLISH VERSION:***
So, I guess your European tour has already begun. I think you’re somewhere in Germany right now…right?
Cas: Yes. We played our final show in Germany last night. We are now headed due west in route to Brussels.
It’s only 4 or 5 gigs up to now…does the tour meets your expectations?
Keith: The crowds have been great so far. We are hoping it continues for the rest of the tour! We love the fans over here…they are true music lovers.
Cas: Can’t believe the turnouts these past few days! We are tickled pink. It looks like our crowd has doubled in size since coming over last time.
In about three weeks from now, you’re visiting Greece for two gigs. First time here, at your third European tour. Was there a possibility to come here earlier or it was the first time that you had a proposal?
Cas: We’ve had a lot of fans ask us; but this is the first time a promoter (Made of Stone Productions) is taking a chance on us.
Keith: I am so excited to finally be coming to Greece. It has always been a dream of mine. We are hoping to get some time to explore the sites as well.
Four Sasquatch albums during a decade. That’s pretty impressive. Is it time for some new tunes from the band? It’s been almost two and a half years since “IV”. Maybe after the end of the current tour? Do you have something in the making?
Keith: We have about 7 songs done for the new record and lots of ideas. We just need to get in the studio and start recording. The plan is to have it finished and out by the end of the year.
All of your albums are of top quality. Very good tunes, one or two classics in each one of them, no fillers at all. Personally, I have no favourite Sasquatch album. All four of them are great. Does it have to do with the fact that you maintain a solid line up all those years? Keith and Rick are the core of the band and Jason is also involved in the writing process or am I wrong?
Keith: I think so, I think of us as brothers till the end and hope it reflects in the music. Everyone does their part and contributes. And thank you for those kinds words about our albums. It means a lot.
Cas: Keith is being modest. He is the primary songwriter in the band. I’m the hack in the band. After the cake comes out of the oven though, I do like to come in and spread a little frosting on it. Sprinkle a little love on top.
Your are usually called a stoner band. Do you agree with this term? I mean you obviously like the 70’s, who doesn’t? But should every band that sounds like the 70’s to be called “stoner”?
Keith: I don’t think of us as a typical stoner rock band. Dirty fuzzy rock is more appropriate.
Cas: If it helps someone identify or describe a genre of bands, then it’s all good. For us, I’d say we were purple rock.
Since I mentioned the 70’s, can you name some of the bands that have influenced your sound as a band?
Keith: Besides the obvious bands, I’m really into The faces, Yes, Peter Frampton, Steely Dan, Kiss, Pink Floyd…the list is endless. Great time in music.
Cas: While bands like Rush and Yes are in my top picks, most of what influences me are the bands from the late 80s/early 90s that I saw back in high school and college. I was into a lot of thrash in high school, but then I discovered Nirvana and the Melvins and my tastes went sideways from there. Bands like Shiner, Failure, Barkmarket, and Quicksand are still my faves today.
All these years, Smallstone is your home. It is a very important label for this sound, not only in the U.S. but worldwide. About ten years ago when I was searching the net for some good music, Smallstone was always there. That was when I found out about Sasquatch. Is it important for a band to be in a record label that has a very good reputation and be known for its quality releases?
Keith: I wouldn’t know.
Cas: No.
A few years ago Smallstone signed our own local heavy rock heroes, Nightstalker. Have you heard of any other Greek bands?
Keith: I’m not familiar with too much new music unless we play with the bands. I’m kind of stuck in the 70’s. But I’m looking forward to hearing some new bands when we get down there.
Cas: I have the Nightstalker record. I dig it a bunch. We were actually listening to it in the van and our tour manager was telling us how big they are in Greece. I had no clue.
During the last years, 70’s influenced tunes are on the rise. So many bands, American and European, give us great albums, either it is heavy rock or psychedelic rock, or blues rock or whatever. Why do you think this is happening?
Keith: Well the music and musicianship is far superior to anything today (in my opinion) and I believe this is the major reason. Thank goodness that people are going back to the roots.
What do you expect from your two shows here? I mean, it is uncharted territory for you since you will be visiting us for the first time…
Keith: I just hope the people dig what we do. I can tell you what to expect from us is that we will leave it all on the stage those 2 shows.
Cas: Looking forward to a fantastic Greek meal (or three), but I try not to put expectations on our gigs. Whatever happens, we just want to enjoy the experience of being there. Riggs, our drummer, travels to Greece every year. He says we are in for a humdinger of a time.
That’s all from me…enjoy the rest of your tour! See you in Athens in a few weeks! Cheers!
Keith: Thanks man. Looking forward to meeting and drinking with you all!
