Καλησπέρα Rafael και καλώς ήρθες στο Rockin’Athens.gr! Πώς τα πάτε αυτό τον καιρό;
Θες να μας δώσεις μερικές πληροφορίες για το νέο άλμπουμ και πότε θα κυκλοφορήσει;
Το “Invernal” κυκλοφόρησε πριν τέσσερα χρόνια. Γιατί σας πήρε τόσο πολύ μέχρι το νέο άλμπουμ;
Θα περιοδεύσετε με τους Acid King, το έχετε ξανακάνει στο παρελθόν; Και πώς νομίζετε ότι θα είναι;
Ποιες είναι οι σημαντικότερες σας επιρροές;
The Misfits, Black Flag, Minor Threat, The Dead Kennedys. Rush, King Crimson, Ornette Coleman, Return to Forever και Les Baxter
Ποιο είναι το κίνητρο ώστε να παίζετε ωμή και επιθετική μουσική;
Και στις ηχογραφήσεις αλλά και στα live χρησιμοποιείτε ενισχυτή μπάσου. Αυτό συμβαίνει επειδή σας αρέσει ο δεμένος και fuzzy ήχος ή απλά θέλετε να καλύψετε την απουσία ενός μπάσου;
Το live σας στην Αθήνα θα είναι σε ένα μεγάλο χώρο. Προτιμάς να παίζετε σε μεγάλους χώρους ή σε μικρά υπόγεια;

ENGLISH VERSION
Hey Black Cobra welcome to Rockin’Athens.gr ! How are you doing these days?
Great. We’ve been working on the new album non stop and getting ready for the upcoming Europe tour.
Would you like to give us some info for your forthcoming album and when it will be released?
The new album is scheduled to be released later this year. Every album we explore new dynamics and try and push the envelope of what we usually do. It’s a challenge which we love. You have to keep growing as an artist and expand your horizons musically or else there is the possibility of becoming stagnant and predictable. I’m always excited to check out new things from my favorite artists. Whether it’s a new movie from Robert Rodriguez or a new album from George Benson. It’s interesting to see the avenues that other artists explore which in turn inspires you to create new things as well.
“Invernal” was released four years ago.Why it took you so long for the new album?
Well we did a pretty extensive world tour in support of the album. Usually we’d put out an album and tour non stop for a year with very little time in between. This time we ended up spreading the tours a lot more. We didn’t plan it that way but every time we would plan and staying home and work on music a great tour opportunity would come up.
You are gonna be on tour with Acid King, have you done it before? and how do you think it’s gonna be like?
We did a tour of North America with AK in 2006 and then we did Europe with AK in 2007. I was playing bass in Acid King then so I got to play two sets a night on different instruments which was awesome. This upcoming tour is going to be great. Looking forward to it.
Which are your major influences?
Oh there’s all kindsa good stuff out there. Deep Purple, Sabbath, Zeppelin, Pink Floyd, and Hendrix are at the core of every metal or rock band. I mean those guys right there are the forefathers of modern heavy dark rock/metal. Then there’s the late 70’s/ 80’s metal that was very influential as well: Judas Priest, Iron Maiden, Slayer, early Metallica. I was attracted at at early age to punk music for it’s rawness and honesty. The Misfits, Black Flag, Minor Threat, The Dead Kennedys. I worked for Jello Biafra at Alternative Tentacles Records when I first moved to San Francisco. I discovered a lot of great underground artists working at that label like Neurosis and Amebix as well as people like Noam Chomsky and Howard Zinn. Rush, King Crimson, Ornette Coleman, Return to Forever and Les Baxter are artist that have been a huge inspiration for me throughout the years. You know, all the greats. I’ve been listening a lot to Kavinsky and Vangelis recently.
What motivates you to play raw and aggressive music?
I like the energy of it. There’s a lot of force behind the vibrations that are being projected through the air. In a way, you become a sort of radiating energy source.
Both on recordings and gigs you are using a bass amplifier. This is just because you like the fuzzy and solid sound or you just want to cover the absence of a bass guitar?
Since we don’t have a bass player we wanted to capture the whole dynamic range of a full band as if there was a bass. Jason’s guitar is tuned lower than normal which helps him get a crunch and a chunk that you can’t get any other way. So a bass amp helps us harness the lower frequencies that you can’t capture with guitar amps.
Tell us one of the best and one of the worst things than happened while playing a gig.
We’ve never really had any major disasters on stage. One time in Japan we were playing and a kid climbed on top of one of the speaker columns and jumped into the crowd but no one caught him so he landed straight onto the floor. Below is the link of the incident. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ZTx0ngjvsAg&spfreload=10 A cool thing that happened recently, Matt Pike from High On Fire came to see us play last October at a club in San Francisco. It means a lot to us to have his respect.
Your show in Athens will be in a big venue. What do you prefer, playing in big venues or small basements?
I love doing both. Getting to play through big sound systems is great at the big venues. That’s always exciting. It feels a little strange when the fans are so far away where as in smaller clubs you are a lot closer to the audience and you have a more direct interaction with the crowd.
What’s on your turntables lately?
