Μπορείς να συστήσεις τους Borracho στους Έλληνες fans; Το όνομα της μπάντας στα ισπανικά σημαίνει «μεθυσμένος». Ήσασταν μεθυσμένοι την ώρα που διαλέξατε το όνομα αυτό;
Borracho!
To τελευταίο σας album, “Oculus”, κυκλοφόρησε το καλοκαίρι. Ποιο είναι το feedback που έχeτε λάβει μέχρι τώρα;
To feedback στα live shows ήταν πάρα πολύ θετικό, κι έχουμε κατορθώσει να κάνουμε μερικά φοβερά shows εξαιτίας αυτού, με μπάντες που αγαπάμε.
Τσεκάροντας το site σας, ανακάλυψα ότι δεν έχετε υπογράψει με καμία δισκογραφική εταιρία μέχρι τώρα. Πρέπει να είναι δύσκολο αυτό για την μπάντα, έτσι; Όμως, η απουσία μιας δισκογραφικής δεν αποτελεί ανασταλτικό παράγοντα, από τη στιγμή που η μπάντα είναι τόσο ενεργή;
Απ’ όσο γνωρίζω θα κάνετε μια Eυρωπαϊκή περιοδεία την άνοιξη, και φυσικά όπως πάντα, η χώρα μου δεν συμπεριλαμβάνεται. Ποιες είναι οι προσδοκίες σας γι’ αυτή την περιοδεία;
Είναι συνειδητή η στροφή σε ένα πιο southern–stoner rock στυλ, μουσικά;
Μέχρι τώρα έχετε αρκετά downtuned riffs. Έχετε την πρόθεση να τα κάνατε πιο heavy;
Ποια είναι η δημιουργική διαδικασία για τους Borracho; Κάθε μέλος της μπάντας φέρνει τις δικές του ιδέες και κρατάτε αυτό που ταιριάζει; Είναι πιο εύκολο να ξεκινάτε με τζαμαρίσμα;
Έχετε ακούσει κάτι τελευταία που να σας τράβηξε την προσοχή;
Είμαστε μεγάλοι fans των Boston’s Elder. Υπάρχουν πολλές underground μπάντες σε όλο τον κόσμο που γουστάρουμε, όπως οι Kingsnake, Cortez, Black Cowgirl, Lo-Pan, Valley of the Sun, Foghound, Neon Warship, Supervoid, Wo Fat και πολλοί ακόμη.
Και τέλος, πόσο καιρό πρέπει να κάνουμε υπομονή μέχρι να δούμε τους Borracho στην Αθήνα;
Keep it up, man!

ENGLISH VERSION
We are glad to have Borracho at RockinAthens.gr and thank you very much for this interview!
You’re welcome, Chris. Thanks for the opportunity and a big hello to all you Greek doom heads out there!
Can you introduce Borracho to Greek fans? The bands name in Spanish means ʽdrunkʼ, were you drunk when you decided to name the band?
Borracho has been around since 2007, but we all played together in other bands before that. We started this band out of a shared desire to explore playing heavier, slower music outside what was then our current bands. Back then, Steve and Mario were in high-energy rock band Adam West and Mario and Tim were in the decidedly more throwback hard rock/metal band Assrockers. We were always around each other — actually sharing a practice space when we had the idea to start the band — usually with instruments and/or drinks in hand, so it was easy to explore what the new project would be like through conceptual conversations and musical chairs jams in the space. We all decided to switch from our normal instruments: Steve from bass to guitar, Mario from guitar to drums, Tim from guitar to bass, and Noah from drums to guitar and lead vocals. We had a few jam sessions starting in late 2007 and the with a clear chemistry and some good early material we decided it was on.
We probably weren’t drunk when we decided on our name but it’s highly likely we were drinking! We had a lot of conversations about it, and what it came down to was wanting a simple, memorable one word name that represents what we are about. The a-ha moment was during a smoke break during practice. We just thought a little outside the box, turned to our Spanish skills, and the solution was simple. Borracho! Pretty sure we’ve been drunk ever since.
Your latest album ʽOculusʼ has been released late this summer, what is the feedback you have gotten so far?
The reception to Oculus so far has been just great. All the reviews have been really gracious, the record made it onto bunch of end-of-year lists. Most importantly our fans are really digging it – the feedback we’ve been getting at shows has been really positive, and we’ve been able to put together some great shows with bands we love because of it.
Checking out your site, I discovered that you haven’t signed with a record label yet! It must be hard for the band, isnʼt it? But the absence of a label should not be an inhibiting factor, since the band is more than active
There’s two sides to this issue for us. Taking care of business ourselves is a lot of work, and it’s on top of writing, rehearsing, recording and performing our music AND our day jobs. But we have a lot of the skills we need for packaging and promoting our music and have established excellent networks of bands, promoters, venues, blogs, etc over the years. We’re fortunate to have worked with five different small labels to release our records and singles on vinyl. We’ve also begun to capitalize on the exposure and awareness of our music, so we are selling enough product that it’s viable financially.
But even in this day and age where it’s pretty easy to release your own music, there are definitely still perks to being signed with a label. Obviously they bring some support financially, but the real benefits are their distribution networks and the opportunities they can open up to play with outstanding bands and at the more prestigious venues and festivals. It just helps to have others working for you, and we’re definitely open to working with the right label. That time will come when it’s right, but as you said, the lack of record contract isn’t much of a barrier for Borracho to continue to prolifically release music ourselves and with the support of smaller labels.
ʽOculusʼ is Borrachoʼs second lp and I believe that is more focused than previous. Was due to more experience you have gained over the years? For example, when I am listening your first album it seems to me that you are trying to fit your influences and trying to find Borracho sound but at ʽOculusʼ you have found your sound and you are trying to evolve it and being more progressive!
I think it’s always true that the more time a band with good chemistry spends together playing, writing, riding in the van, sitting at the bar, you gain experience, become more cohesive creatively and are able to more easily actualize the vision. So Oculus certainly benefits from the additional time we’ve spent together and the previous experience of producing Splitting Sky.
That said, it’s also the case that the two records were created under very different circumstances, so that has something to do with the progression in sound. With Splitting Sky we had our choice of songs to record and release from a selection of everything we had written since we started. When we recorded Splitting Sky we were actually just hitting our creative stride, so the songs that were written closest to the time of the recording sessions are closer to the direction we achieved with Oculus. We wrote Oculus as a trio as instrumentals, expecting that Noah, who had left the country for work, would be back to record vocals. So when that didn’t happen Steve stepped up to sing, so the whole approach was completely different, with the lyrics written and vocals added at the end. And we’ll likely have a different approach when we write and record the next full length. That’s just how evolution works. You don’t try, you just do it.
As I know you are coming for a tour at Europe next spring, and of course as always my country is not included, what are your expectations for that tour?
We’re certainly excited to get across the pond and give Europeans a first dose of our live show. It’s quite an honor to be invited to play Desertfest in London and that opportunity will allow us to play additional dates in Germany, Austria and other western European countries. We’re still finalizing the tour and will be announcing it in February. In terms of expectations, we’re just hoping for good crowds that dig what they hear, making some new friends and playing with other awesome bands. Steve and Mario have made the rounds of Europe with Adam West, so getting to see old friends, and visiting places with good memories will be really cool too. Maybe the only downside is not getting to play in Greece this time. But we shall return and we hope to play for our Greek fans as soon as possible.
ʽMusic wiseʼ you are moving in the middle of southern-stoner rock style, conscious choice?
It’s hard to say if influences are conscious, subconscious, unconscious. We’re all huge fans classic rock, southern rock, and southern stoner sound, but also the classic American West Coast desert groove in the vein of Fu Manchu and Nebula, the American Mid-Atlantic sounds of Clutch, Sixty-Watt Shaman and Spirit Caravan… it’s all stuff we love to listen to so it’s inevitable that those influences will wind up in our music. Sort of hard to avoid. We don’t deliberately set out to write a Southern rock tune, but if the riff is there, we’ll take it.
Heavy downtuned riffs till now, do you have the intention to be heavier?
We have every intention of maintaining the quality, low, heavy groove you’ve come to expect from Borracho. From that baseline, we like to see what we can do to create an engaging musical experience. We’re primarily interested in drawing the listener in through tone, riff, concept, and heavy, heavy grooves.
How is the creative process for Borracho? Every part of the band brings their unique ideas and keep those which match? Is it easier to try things from a big jam session?
Our creative process is collaborative and deliberative. Someone will come up with a riff, a beat, a bassline, or a section that we’ll work over in rehearsal for weeks or months until it eventually coalesces into a tune, is added to something else we’ve been working on, gets new riffs or sections added to it, or is tossed out. We don’t set out to write a tune with this or that sound – we really try to follow the creative process to it’s logical conclusion. We believe in letting the creative process take us wherever it will.
Anything good that the band members heard lately and drew your attention?
We’re all huge fans of Boston’s Elder, they just smoke. But there’s lots of great underground bands from all over the place that we really dig, like Kingsnake, Cortez, Black Cowgirl, Lo-Pan, Valley of the Sun, Foghound, Neon Warship, Supervoid, Wo Fat, and on and on. We’ve been fortunate enough to share stages with and become friends with a bunch of them, and look forward to discovering, playing with, and meeting new bands in our travels.
And last but not least for how long do we have to be patient to see a live show from Borracho in Athens?
Well if it were up to us, we’d play in Athens tomorrow. We’re sure that the fans would be awesome and we’d be able to give them a superior show. Sadly, it’ll be a bit of time before we can make it to that part of the world. Best we can do is keep trying to convince people here that we need to play over there and get them to get us over there. If this first trip to Europe goes well, we’ll be back and hopefully we can make our way south. Keep the faith Athens!
Thank you very much!
Thanks again Chris. We really appreciate this opportunity and all you do to keep fans connected with the music they like and the bands that make it. Without people like you working tirelessly to elevate the scene, bands like Borracho might never get heard outside their home town. Keep it up, man!
