Αυτή τη στιγμή περιοδεύετε με τους The Cult (όταν έγινε η συνέντευξη). Πως νιώθεις με το να μοιράζεσαι τη σκηνή με ένα τόσο μεγάλο όνομα;
Μας έχουν μείνει ακόμη 5 shows με τους The Cult.
Έχετε μεγαλύτερη απήχηση στην Ευρώπη παρά στις Ηνωμένες Πολιτείες από όπου και προέρχεστε. Πώς το εξηγείς αυτό; Θα το χαρακτήριζες περίεργο;
Ηχογραφήσαμε το album μέσα σε 2 ημέρες στα BC Studios στην Νέα Υόρκη με τον μηχανικό ήχου/παραγωγό Martin Bisi, ο οποίος ηχογράφησε και το προηγούμενό μας album “Frying On This Rock”.
O Martin Bisi ήταν υπεύθυνος και για την παραγωγή του album. Πως προέκυψε η συνεργασία σας;
Το να δουλεύει μια μπάντα με έναν τόσο σημαντικό παραγωγό πιστεύεις ότι την βελτιώνει;
Το ’’So You Are…So You ‘ll Be’’ είναι πιθανότατα το πιο straightforward album σας…ήταν μια συνειδητή επιλογή ώστε να ακουστείτε σε ένα ευρύτερο κοινό η απλά σας προέκυψε κατα τη διάρκεια της συγγραφής;
Η μουσική σας θα εμφανίζεται στο soundtrack της νέας ταινίας του Jim Jarmusch, “Only Lovers Left Alive”. Aκόμα ένα βήμα για ένα πιο ευρύ κοινό ίσως;
Σε διάφορες συνεντεύξεις σας χρησιμοποιείτε τον όρο “Fuzzed Out Motorik Space Rock” για να περιγράψετε τη μουσική σας. Πως προέκυψε αυτό;
Και η τελευταία μου ερώτηση…τι περιμένεις από τα δύο shows στην Ελλάδα, από τη στιγμή που είναι και η πρώτη φορά που μας επισκέπτεστε;
ENGLISH VERSION
Before we start with the inteview, I would like to welcome you to Rockin’Athens.gr and thank you for the time you spent answering my questions!
Currently you are touring with The Cult. How do you feel sharing the stage with such a big name?
It’s great and it is an honor. We only have 5 more dates left at this point. The time has flown by quickly.
Your fanbase is in Europe despite the fact that you come from the U.S. How can you explain/perceive it? Isn’t it a little bizarre?
No, I wouldn’t say it’s bizarre. When I started the band I had no desire to break it in the U.S. I felt that a European audience would understand the band more, so I decided to focus on Europe. My gamble paid off.
Do you feel a little bit ‘Europeans’ because of that fact? I mean it’s not the first time that you’re touring in Europe.
No, no necessarily, even though we’ve been touring more in Europe than in the U.S. For that matter I don’t necessarily feel American. For me I don’t need to brand myself with where I come from or live. There are aspects of European life that agree with me more but that doesn’t necessarily make me feel European.
At this point, I would like to congratulate you about your new album. Please give us some info about the recording of the album.
We recorded the album over 2 days at BC Studios in Brooklyn with engineer/producer Martin Bisi. Martin also recorded our last album “Frying On This Rock”. He’s known for his work with Bill Laswell, Sonic Youth, The Swans, Herbie Hancock and many more. Martin’s studio is located in a building that used to be a Civil War era armory. It’s all brick with really high ceilings. The space is sectioned off into different rooms for recording each instrument separately. This time around we tracked the drums, bass and guitar in the same room, which is where the drums are usually tracked by them self. The album was then mixed at my studio, 60B, in Manhattan. From beginning to end the album took just a little over 2 weeks to put together. The songs were pretty well formed upon entering the studio, that’s why it didn’t take much time to put the album together. The biggest hurdle was deciding which tracks to use and which ones not use. We tracked enough songs to release a triple album, but in the end the album was best suited as a single LP.
Responsible for the production of the album was Martin Bisi (Swans, Sonic Youth among others). How did this cooperation came up?
Martin didn’t produce the album, he just recorded it. The album was mixed and produced by myself, Antronhy (who has worked with us in many different capacities since 2006) and Pierre Auntour. This is the core production team that has worked together on the last three albums. That said, Martin’s engineering expertise really shows with the sound quality of the tracks. He is a great person and is a master at what he does. Ego and I first met Martin while recording with a band that both of us were in before White Hills started. We struck up a friendship with him and finally got around to working with him again just a little over 2 years ago.
Do you feel that working with such an important producer, makes a band better in every aspect?
Not necessarily.
’’So You Are…So You ‘ll Be’’…maybe your most straightforward album? It was a conscious choice to be heard to a wider audience or just came out simpler in structure while writing it?
The choice had nothing to do with trying to get a wider audience to hear us. It is just how the album ended up sounding.
Recently your music appeared in the soundtrack of the movie “Only Lovers Left Alive” by director Jim Jarmusch. Was that another step to a wider/greater audience?
I’m not sure yet, as the movie hasn’t been released at this point. We’ll see what happens once it does come out.
I have read in some of your interviews that you use the term ‘’Fuzzed Out Motorik Space Rock’’ to describe your music. How did that came up?
I came up with the term and feel that it encompasses what we do. We aren’t just a psych band or a stoner band and so on…we are the sum of many things.
Here is my last question for you. Since this is your first appearance in Greece, what do you expect from these two shows?
I try not to have expectations. I like to walk into each and every new situation with an open mind and experience what unfolds in the moment. I will say that I’m very excited to play in Greece. It is somewhere that I’ve wanted to play for many years and we are all really looking forward to it.
