Ξεκινώντας, θέλω να επικεντρωθώ στην τελευταία σας κυκλοφορία, “(r)Evolution”. To 2013, κάνατε ένα διάλειμμα που διήρκεσε 18 μήνες. Ποιος ήταν ο πραγματικός λόγος αυτού του διαλείμματος και πώς επηρέασε την μπάντα, θετικά ή αρνητικά, στη διαδικασία της σύνθεσης του καινούριου δίσκου;
Τα προβλήματα αφορούσαν μόνο το management ή υπήρχαν και προβλήματα μέσα στη μπάντα;
Στο τέλος αυτού του διαλείμματος, έχουμε την αποχώρηση του Anders Johansson, ο οποίος ήταν στην μπάντα από το 1999, αν θυμάμαι καλά. Πώς επηρέασε, εσένα προσωπικά αλλά και, την μπάντα γενικότερα, η αντικατάστασή του με τον David Wallin, των Pain;
Ποιος ήταν ο λόγος της αποχώρησής του;
Όσον αφoρά το “(r)Evolution”, μπορώ να πω ότι έχει κάτι από τα παλιά! Όταν το πρωτοάκουσα, διέκρινα κάτι από “Legacy of Kings” και “Renegade”! Αυτό είχε να κάνει με τις ιδέες σου ή και με το γεγονός ότι την παραγωγή ανέλαβε ο Frederik Nordstrom, ο οποίος, ίσως, συνέβαλε στο να βγει αυτό το “παλιό” συναίσθημα;
Ήταν σαν να ξεκινούσατε, πάλι, από το μηδέν;
Είχα αυτή την ερώτηση για πιο μετά, αλλά μιας και έθιξες το θέμα του εξώφυλλου του “(r)Evolution”, θα την ρωτήσω τώρα. Όσον αφορά το “Infected”, ήταν το μοναδικό εξώφυλλο, χωρίς την μασκότ σας, τον ιππότη Hector. Και εκτός αυτού, ήταν ένα ασυνήθιστο εξώφυλλο για έναν Hammefall δίσκο. Ήταν λίγο spooky! Πώς γεννήθηκε η ιδέα του Hector και γιατί δεν ήταν στο εξώφυλλο του “Infected”;
Όταν ηχογραφούσαμε το “Glory to the Brave” και μάθαμε ότι ο Andreas Marschall θα επιμεληθεί το εξώφυλλο, θέλαμε να έχουμε έναν χαρακτήρα, ο οποίος θα αντιπροσώπευε τους Hammerfall· κάτι σαν τον Eddie, των Iron Maiden.
Όσον αφορά παλαιότερα μέλη: Όλοι ξέρουμε ότι ο Mikale Stanne και ο Jesper Stromblad, ήταν μέλη των Hammerfall, πριν καν ακόμα κυκλοφορήσει το “Glory to the Brave”! Είδαμε τον Mikael Stanne στο “Gates of Dalhalla”, να τραγουδάει το “Steel Meets Steel” και επίσης είναι γνωστό ότι ο Jesper έχει συνεισφέρει, συνθετικά, σε πολλά τραγούδια. Πώς και δεν υπήρξε ποτέ κάποια επίσημη, guest, εμφάνισή τους σε κάποιον δίσκο;
Πες μας για τη διαδικασία της σύνθεσης ενός δίσκου Hammerfall! Γράφετε όλοι μαζί και ανταλλάσσετε ιδέες ή μόνο εσύ και ο Joacom γράφετε τα πάντα;
Εκτός των Hammerfall, υπάρχει άλλη μία μπάντα, παλαιότερη και από τους Hammerfall, από το 1989, η οποία διαλύθηκε το 1995 και επανενώθηκε το 2012, για μία εμφάνιση στο “The Gothenborg Sound Festival”, το 2014. Προφανώς μιλάω για τους Ceremonial Oath! Κάποιο νέο για αυτό το project; Υπάρχουν ακόμη, υπάρχουν πλάνα για καινούριο album ή κάποια περιοδεία;
Όχι, όχι!
Ας αφήσουμε τη μουσική στην άκρη για λίγο. Τι σου αρέσει να κάνεις τον ελέυθερό σου χρόνο;
Διάβασα σε μία παλαιότερη συνέντευξή σου, για το πάθος σου για την πάλη και το ΜΜΑ, κάτι το οποίο πρέπει να παραδεχτώ ότι δεν γνώριζα. Είναι αλήθεια;
Ναι!
Δεν γνωρίζω απολύτως τίποτα από ΜΜΑ, αλλά ποιος είναι ο αγαπημένος σου παλαιστής [wrestling];
Χα!
Έχεις πάει σε wrestling shows;
Είναι η πρώτη σου φορά στην Ελλάδα;
1997… Είχε κυκλοφορήσει μόνο το “Glory to the Brave”!
Ναι, μόνο το “Glory to the Brave”.
Τι θυμάσαι από τα shows στην Ελλάδα;
Αδημονείς για το show στις 13 Δεκεμβρίου;
Πάλι στην Ελλάδα;
Πώς κι έτσι;
ΟΚ. Αυτά από εμένα. Σ’ ευχαριστώ πολύ για το χρόνο σου. Κάτι τελευταίο για τους Έλληνες οπαδούς σας;
Ναι.
Take care!
**ENGLISH VERSION:***
To begin with, I want to focus on your latest album, “(r)Evolution”. In 2013 you took an 18 month break. What was the actual reason for this break and how did this affected the band, in a good or a bad way, in the process of writing the new album?
The reason for this break was that we were tired of everything, I think. We had, for years, management problems, not very serious, but still big enough that things were not alright, were wrong, and this affected everything else that we were doing, so we didn’t have fun any more, not as much as we should have and as much as we had before. It was a problem for us, so we decided to try to recharge the batteries by taking a break. At that point we had done 15 years straight of Hammerfall without any breaks. It was time to just look at something else for a while and not just think about Hammerfall for a little while.
So, there were only management problems or there were problems inside the band as well?
No, no, nothing inside the band. We were all on the same page with this. I think everybody was tired of the same and nothing changing and also this management things made the atmosphere, not bad but, stressful, when it didn’t have to be. There was a lot of things that were accumulated. Decided to take that break was the best thing that could ever happen because if we wouldn’t have taken this break, I’m not sure that I would be sitting here talking to you now. I think that we might have imploded somehow, at that point. At least, there would have been something different with Hammerfall. Because we took this break, we all found joy again. We found the happiness of being in Hammerfall, again, and everything was all of a sudden fun, you know! You look forward to every part of it!
So you did recharge the batteries!
(laughs) We surely did, there is no question. Everybody did different things but when was the time to start working on a new Hammerfall album, I was so anxious to start warking, the first two songs came out in, like, a week or something. I’ve never experience this before, in my life. It just went really fast to start working all this songs and they were so much fun and the energy was definitely there and I think that the energy has been lucking in some Hammerfall albums before. We always tried to get it but it’s difficult when you don’t have it, you know!
At the end of this break, we have the departure of Anders Johansson, your long time drummer, since 1999, if I can recall. How did you, personally, and as a band felt with his replacement by Pain’s David Wallin?
I think Anders took us by surprise, I was not ready for that, at all!
What was the reason of his departure?
I don’t know, really! I think he never, really, gave us a good reason. He is a strange guy. Well I think that why he didn’t wanna do it anymore, was because that he is ten years older than everybody else, so he’s been doing this for ten years longer and on a much larger scale in the ‘80s when he was with Malmsteen, so I don’t think he looked forward to doing the rounds on the tour bus again in Europe, like we had done for many many years together with Hammerfall. I also think he wanted to spend more time with his family. He had a newborn, at that point he was two years old, a new son. So I think he wanted to be home, more with them and not waste his time on the road. But I’m not sure if that was the actual reason, that’s what I think, anyway.
About “(r)Evolution”, I can tell that it has something from the past. When I first heard it I could catch the feeling of “Legacy of Kings” and “Renegade”! This had to do with your ideas or the fact that Frederik Nordstrom produced “(r)Evolution” and brought out that old feeling?
Well, the reason “(r)Evolution” sounds the way it does, is because we took this long break and was so anxious to get back in to play Hammerfall again.
So, it’s like starting from zero again?
Yeah, basically. And also, Fredrik Nordstrom, he is a genius in certain ways of producing. He is really, really good, and he is, of course one of the reasons why this album sounds the way it does. He set the drums and guitars sound, together with us, and he did the mixing, most importantly. He put his fingerprints all over, too. So there are lots of elements that are working together, like the album cover, made by Andreas Marschall, who also did the first three Hammerfall covers, and that puts the album in a positive eye, before you put it in the cd player· you can tell it’s a classic Hammerfall cover.
I had this question for later, but since you mentioned the cover of “(r)Evolution”, I’m going to ask it right now. So, about “Infected”. It was the only cover without your mascot, the knight Hector. And apart from this, it was an unusual cover for Hammerfall. It was a little spooky! So, how the idea of Hector was born and why he was not in the cover of “Infected”?
Well, lets start from the beginning then! When we had recorded Glory to the Brave, and we learned that Andreas Marschall was going to paint the cover, we wanted to have a guy that represented Hammerfall, that was like the Iron Maiden’s Eddie, you know, you see Eddie, you know it’s Iron maiden, it doesn’t have to be any logo or letters next to it. We wanted a warrior that when you see him you would think of Hammerfall immediately. So this is what we asked Andreas Marschall to do and he did it better than anybody would have hoped for! Why he was not on the cover od infected, is because we wanted to try something different and we had this guy take the photos and do the video, and also come up with the idea of the album cover. When I look at the Infected album, it is very different, and I’m talking about the white one though, not the horrible black one! (laughs)
I have see only the black one!
No, the black one was a huge mistake, and with it, nobody was satisfied. But the white one is really good. That’s a very different Hammerfall cover, but I really like it! i think it fits really well with the theme that we had on the video and also the overall feeling of the album.
Something about old band members: We all know that Mikael Stanne and Jesper Stromblad were members of Hammerfall, even before “Glory to the brave”. We saw Micheal Stanne on Gates of Dalhalla singing Steel Meets Steel, and also it’s a known fact that Jesper has contributed in a lot of Hammerfall songs. How come that none of this guys ever made an official guest appearance?!
I don’t really know. It’s a good question. Probably because after Legacy of Kings we didn’t record any album in Gothenburg untill “Infected”. I think that has to do a lot with it.
You should consider such a guest appearance!
Yeah, you never know! Never say never, right? Never know what will happen in the future!
What about the writing process of a Hammerfall album? Do you all get together and exchange ideas or only you and Joacim write all the stuff?
It’s more of the second one. We never write anything together, it doesn’t work like that for me, I don’t like sit down with people and brainstorm. I wanna be able to do that in my comfort of my own home when I’m relaxed and when I can get a feel for the riffs or the melodies before I show it to anybody, and that’s how I like to work. This is how we always had worked. Joacim and I, have found a way to work together really well. I do the demos of the music and vocal melodies, if I have some, I send him a demo with a drum machine and the guitars and the bass on it and then he completes him with the rest of the melodies and the lyrics. That’s how we work together and, basically, that’s how we always have worked together and I think it’s great, it really works for us.
Out side Hammerfall, there is another band, even older that Hammerfall, from 1989, disbanded in 1995 and reunited in 2012, for an appearance on “The Gothenborg Sound Festival”, on 2013. Of course I’m taking about Ceremonial Oath! Any hot news for this project? Do they still exist, any plans for a new album or some kind of tour?
Nah, not really! It exists on the same level that we have on the last couple of years but it’s never been anything other than a fun thing. It’s really fun, it’s like when we started rehearsing, like twenty years ago. There are a lot of emotions, good ones. But it’s a matter of timing with this one too. It’s people want to do their stuff. Anders has many bands he’s playing with, Jesper has different stuff, I’m busy with Hammerfall usually now. So, I’m not saying no, I definitely, would like to do something on the future, but we have no plans.
I did enjoy you voice very much on this one!
Yeah, that’s good, thank you! I enjoyed that very much too! This is how I wanted death metal to sound like!
Let’s leave music aside for a while. What do you enjoy doing in you spare time?
Right now, I’m playing a lot of video games! I’m a retro gaming collector, usually the Legend of Zelda related games! And actually, to be honest, most of my time, when I’m not with Hammerfall, goes to playing with my son, doing fun stuff with him.
I didn’t know you have a son!
Yeah, he’s one year old. At this age, he’s walking around, running. Very good age!
I had read in an older interview of yours about your passion with wrestling and MMA, something I can admit I didn’t know about. Is that true?
Yeah, I discovered wrestling in 1991. That was my passion, besides music for 15 years or more than that! I could have left Hammerfall for that! (laughing) Ok, not really because I didn’t have that type of body, but I used to have this disillution! But I had other interest besides wrestling, and that was MMA. I started watching MMA at 1996, maybe ’97. I think the first one I saw was Ultimate Ultimate 1996, and I thought it was fantastic! So, that’s a big part of my life, I watch a lot of MMA!
I don’t know anything about MMA, but who is your favorite wrestler?
Ha! I always said I don’t really have a favorite wrestler, cause I like good matches, but since you ask, I get to know Chris Jericho a little bit and he’s a really, really cool guy, so I would say Chris Jericho.
Have you ever gone to wrestling shows?
Of course! Actually I went to Japan, to see Wrestle-1, two weeks ago. I’ve been to Lucha Libre, Mexico, I’ve been, of course, to Swedish wrestling, which is very small, but they do a really good job, and I’d seen WWE a couple of times.
So, is it your first time in Greece?
No, not really. It’s the second one! We’ve been there once again, in 1997. It’s a long time ago! We did a tour with Gamma Ray, it was our first tour ever. And the tour we did back then, it ended in Greece, so those shows we did, one in Thessaloniki and two shows at the Rodon Club, was the end of the tour, and it was really exiting time!
Rodon Club does not exist any more…
Oh, yeah I’ve heard of that, unfortunately.
1997, so, only “Glory to the Brave”, till then?
Yes, only “Glory to the Brave”. We played 45 minutes as an opening band.
What are your memories from these shows?
Oh, I remember a lot of things! I remember the fans been absolutely crazy! I’ve never experienced anything like that before. I don’t know how to describe it. It was a fantastic level of excitement, that the people had, and that made us work even harder to give a good show, as well. So, it’s been 18 years since we came last time and I’m expecting a really, really crazy crowd, in December. And back then, it really took me by surprise, cause I didn’t know anything about that unbelievable, enthusiastic crowd that we had.
So, are you exited about the show on th 13th of December?
Very much! This is gonna be the last show that we do on this tour!
Again in Greece?
(laughs) Yes, again! It’s the final show of this part of the tour and after this, there is only one thing we have to do, and that is the “70.000 Tons of Metal” cruise, in Febuary, next year, but that’s in Miami, a Carrebean cruise, so it doesn’t really counts. So the show in Greece, will be tha final show of the tour and it’s gonna be brilliant, I know this!
I think there’s no show in Thessaloniki this time, right?
Yup, this time it’s only one show and it’s only in Athens.
How come?
I don’t know! Ask the promoter! (laughs)
Ok. That was all, from me. I’d like to thank you very much for your time. Any last words for your Greek fans?
Yes. For those who came to the show last time, expect an even greater show this time! And for those who didn’t go to that show, come to this one cause you never know if it takes us years to return! And again, it’s gonna be a fucking fantastic evening, I know this for sure! So, if you like heavy metal, if you like to have fun and if you like to watch a band that knows what they’re doing on stage, they should definitely check this out!
See you on Decebber, then!
Absolutely! Take care!
