Οι θρυλικοί Godfathers με το νέο τους album “Alpha, Beta, Gamma, Delta” στις αποσκευές τους, γιορτάζουν τα 35 τους χρόνια, περνώντας από τη χώρα μας για ένα mini tour σε Αθήνα, Θεσσαλονίκη, Καρδίτσα, Πτολεμαΐδα και Σέρρες. Ο Γιώργος Χούλλης συζήτησε με τον frontman και συνιδρυτή της μπάντας, Peter Coyne για πολλά και ενδιαφέροντα όπως μπορείτε να διαπιστώσετε και οι ίδιοι παρακάτω.
Γεια σας από την Αθήνα και το Rockinathens.gr. Σε λίγες ημέρες επιστρέφετε στην Ελλάδα για ένα mini tour. Πως αισθάνεστε;
Πολύ ενθουσιασμένοι. Αγαπάμε να δίνουμε συναυλίες στην όμορφη χώρα σας. Το κοινό μπορεί να γίνει αρκετά ‘τρελό’ εκεί. Έχουμε αρκετές συναυλίες στην Ελλάδα στο παρελθόν και θέλαμε πολύ να επιστρέψουμε. Οι Έλληνες είστε πολύ φιλικοί και φιλόξενοι.
Ο τίτλος του τελευταίου album σας, “Alpha, Beta, Gamma, Delta” έχει προφανώς μία ελληνική προέλευση. Υπάρχει κάποιο story πίσω από αυτή την επιλογή;
Ήθελα κάτι αρκετά ‘καλλιτεχνικό΄ ως τίτλο του album, ένα τίτλο που θα μπορούσε ο καθένας να ερμηνεύσει διαφορετικά. Δε θα πω τι σημαίνει για μένα γιατί θα χαλάσει όλο το μυστήριο. Μπορεί για σένα να σημαίνει κάτι και για κάποιον άλλο κάτι εντελώς διαφορετικό.
Τα κομμάτια του νέου album γράφτηκαν κατά την περίοδο των lockdowns ή υπήρχε υλικό έτοιμο από πριν;
Είχαμε ηχογραφημένα τρία κομμάτια πριν η νόσος Covid σταματήσει τον πλανήτη Γη και κάποια ήταν σχεδόν έτοιμα, τα οποία και προσπαθούσαμε να ολοκληρώσουμε. Τότε ξαφνικά και αφού βρεθήκαμε σε συνθήκες απομόνωσης, λόγω των lockdowns, αποφασίσαμε να χρησιμοποιήσουμε το χρόνο που είχαμε ετοιμάζοντας περισσότερο υλικό, έτσι το album έγινε ακόμη πιο δυνατό όσο ετοιμάζαμε καινούρια κομμάτια.
Γνωρίζω πως κι εσύ πέρασες δύσκολα με τη νόσο…
Όχι και τόσο…είχα ένα θέμα με την αναπνοή μου, βήχα, όπως και πυρετό. Δεν μπορούσα προφανώς να πάω πουθενά και αν μη τι άλλο ήταν πάρα πολύ βαρετά… Άλλοι όμως άνθρωποι το πέρασαν πολύ χειρότερα από εμένα και ήταν πολύ λυπηρό να βλέπεις ανθρώπους να υποφέρουν και να πεθαίνουν… Έτσι έγραψα τους στίχους για το “There’s No Time” και ο μπασίστας μας ο Jon Priestley έγραψε τη μουσική. Επίσης ανέλαβε την παραγωγή του “Alpha, Beta, Gamma, Delta” και έκανε εξαιρετική δουλειά κατά τη γνώμη μου. Το “There’s No Time” είναι μια μπαλάντα για την πανδημία και εξελίχθηκε σε κάτι όμορφο που σε στοιχειώνει. Ήθελα να θυμάμαι αυτή την απαίσια περίοδο και την ‘αιχμαλώτισα’ σε αυτό το κομμάτι.
Πιστεύεις πως υπάρχουν διαφορές στα live shows σε αυτήν την post-Covid πραγματικότητα;
Όχι πραγματικά. Νομίζω πως είναι μία ακόμη ημέρα στη δουλειά για μένα.
Ας γυρίσουμε και πάλι στο τελευταίο σας album, όπου ο χαρακτηριστικός ήχος των Godfathers είναι και πάλι εδώ αλλά συναντάμε και μια φρεσκάδα που κάνει τα νέα κομμάτια να ακούγονται πολύ ‘σύγχρονα’
Σε ευχαριστώ πολύ. Όταν ξεκινήσαμε να δημιουργούμε το “Alpha, Beta, Gamma, Delta”, θέλαμε να δημιουργήσουμε το καλύτερο album των Godfathers. Νομίζω το πετύχαμε. Δε θέλαμε να κάνουμε μία ρέπλικα από το παρελθόν μας. Οι μεγάλες μπάντες εξελίσσονται με το χρόνο. Συμφωνώ πως το album ακούγεται φρέσκο και σύγχρονο αλλά και με κλασικό rock ‘n roll ήχο. Είμαι πολύ περήφανος για το album, περιέχει μερικά εκπληκτικά κομμάτια, ακόμη και η αλληλουχία τους είναι τρομερή, το ένα κομμάτι ‘μπαίνει’ μέσα στο άλλο και ακούγεται σαν ένα.
Σε κάποια κομμάτια ακούγεσαι κουρασμένος και απογοητευμένος με τη σύγχρονη πραγματικότητα, όπως τα “I Hate the 21st Century” και “Bring on the Sunshine”. Ισχύει κάτι τέτοιο;
Μα και βέβαια μισώ τον 21ο αιώνα. Υπάρχει κάποιος εκεί έξω που να είναι ‘ευτυχισμένος’ με τον κόσμο μας αυτή τη στιγμή; Εκεί που λες ότι τα πράγματα δεν μπορούν να γίνουν χειρότερα, μας ‘ρίχνουν΄ κάτι καινούριο σχεδιασμένο να μας κάνει άνω-κάτω. Νομίζω καταλαβαίνεις τι εννοώ… Πάρε για παράδειγμα κάποιους από τους στίχους:
“My sweet lord have mercy on me/I hate the 21st century/Reaper drones, mobile phones, TV, soldiers, tanks & bombs/Shit’s got real & I can’t stand it/That ain’t the way that I planned it/Jesus shine a light on me – I hate the 21st century.”
H ανεβαστική και αισιόδοξη μουσική αυτού του κομματιού έρχεται σε αντίθεση με τους σκοτεινούς του στίχους. Μου αρέσουν οι αντιθέσεις και τα καλύτερά μας κομμάτια πάντα είχαν διάφορες διαστάσεις να ‘τρέχουν’ παράλληλα. Το “Bring on the Sunshine” ας πούμε, νομίζω πως είναι κατά βάθος ένα πολύ θετικό κομμάτι και γι’αυτό το επέλεξα να ανοίξει το νέο μας album.
Παρακολουθείς καθόλου νέα μουσική, νέα συγκροτήματα; Έχεις ξεχωρίσει κάποια από αυτά;
Μου αρέσουν αρκετά νέα πράγματα αλλά όλα μου ακούγονται ψεύτικα και επιτηδευμένα. Πολύ ‘ευγενικά’ και όχι αρκετά ‘συναρπαστικά’ για το γούστο μου.
Μετά από τόσα χρόνια στο δρόμο, στη σκηνή και στο studio, έχεις ακόμη όνειρα για τη μουσική;
Όταν κάνω όνειρα για τη μουσική προσπαθώ να τα μετατρέψω σε πραγματικότητα. Ήθελα να κάνω ένα έξοχο, γ@μάτο, σύγχρονο rock n’ roll album, έστω ίσο ή ακόμη καλύτερο από ότι είχαμε κυκλοφορήσει ως Godfathers στο παρελθόν, και με τη βοήθεια και των υπολοίπων στην μπάντα, νομίζω ότι το καταφέραμε με το “Alpha, Beta, Gamma, Delta”.
H επερχόμενη ελληνική mini tour περιλαμβάνει και κάποιες πιο μικρές επαρχιακές πόλεις που δεν έχετε επισκεφτεί στο παρελθόν. Περιμένετε ένα ζεστό καλωσόρισμα;
Το ελπίζω. Δε θα ήθελα να μας πετάνε σάπιες τομάτες. Είναι πάντα ωραία να παίζεις σε καινούρια μέρη και είμαι σίγουρος ότι θα είναι υπέροχα.

Greetings from Athens. So, you ‘re returning to Greece for a few shows. How do you feel about that?
Very excited – we love touring Greece! It’s such a beautiful country & the audiences can be quite wild in their appreciation of our music. We have played quite a few great concerts before in Greece & obviously we want to continue with that. The Greek people are very hospitable, lovely & friendly.
The title of your latest record, “Alpha, Beta, Gamma, Delta” has definitely a greek origin. Is there a story behind it?
I wanted an arty sounding title that people could make their own mind up about what it meant to them. I don’t want to say too much about what it means to me because that would spoil the mystery for them. So ‘Alpha Beta Gamma Delta’ is what it really means to you, but that interpretation of course would be very different to someone else.
The songs of your latest album were written during the lockdowns or you had the material ready before the whole Covid thing?
We recorded 3 songs before Covid stopped planet earth (‘Wild And Free’ & 2 other numbers that ended up on ‘Alpha Beta Gamma Delta’ – ‘I’m Not Your Slave’ & ‘Dead In Los Angeles’) & there were a couple of other songs like ‘Midnight Rider’ that weren’t quite finished. I had all the lyrics & vocal melody to ‘Bring On The Sunshine’ ready too, then myself & Jon Priestley worked up the tune to it later with his music. Then like everyone we were all suddenly in an enforced isolation due to lockdown restrictions and we used that time extremely wisely by coming up with more great material – so the album became even stronger as we wrote more songs.
Peter, I am aware that you too suffered from Covid. Did you have a hard time with the disease?
Not really, my breathing was quite bad & I had a cough & a temperature & of course I couldn’t go anywhere or do anything so it was boring more than anything. But it was incredibly hard on people everywhere & extremely sad to see so many suffering or dying. So I wrote the lyrics to ‘There’s No Time’ again with our bass player Jon Priestley writing the music….he also produced ‘Alpha Beta Gamma Delta’ & did such a fantastic job of it. ‘There’s No Time’ is a ballad about the pandemic & it turned into something haunting, beautiful & special. I wanted to remember that terrible Coronavirus time & capture it in a song.
Do you think that there is a new post-Covid reality as far as the live shows are concerned?
Not really, it seems like business as usual to me.
Let’s take it back to your latest album. We definitely have the Godfathers sound in it but one can say there is a freshness that gives a contemporary status to the new songs, they feel very “up to date”.
Thank you! With ‘Alpha Beta Gamma Delta’ we set out right from the start to make one of the best albums by The Godfathers ever & I think we definitely achieved that. We weren’t interested at all in replicating what we’d done before in the past. Great bands always evolve naturally & I agree that it does sound fresh & contemporary as well as being classic rock & roll. I am extremely proud of ‘Alpha Beta Gamma Delta’ – there’s not a single second wasted on that album. It’s got some fantastic songs on it & the sequencing of the album is perfect too so although all the numbers are of course very different they flow into one another so the whole album works as one piece.
There are some songs on the new album that give the impression that there is fatigue and disappointment in you about the current time and place we live in, like “I Hate the 21st Century” or “Bring on the Sunshine”. Is it a fact?
Of course I hate the 21st century! Is there anybody out there who is ‘happy’ with the current state of the world right now? Just when you think things surely can’t get any worse they always manage to throw another shitty thing at you designed to mess you up – know what I mean? Of course you do! Here’s a sample of some of the lyrics – “My sweet lord have mercy on me/I hate the 21st century/Reaper drones, mobile phones, TV, soldiers, tanks & bombs/Shit’s got real & I can’t stand it/That ain’t the way that I planned it/Jesus shine a light on me – I hate the 21st century.” But the upbeat music of that song serves as a contrast to the dark lyrics – I like contrasts & our best music always has several dimensions going on at the same time. I think ‘Bring On The Sunshine’ is at its heart a very positive number & that’s why I chose it to open the new album.
Do you take a close look on new bands, new music? Are there any new bands that you stand out?
I do like some new music but it all seems a bit fake & contrived – it’s too polite & not really exciting enough for my taste.
After so many years on the road, on the stage, and inside recording studios, do you still have dreams about music (in a broader sense)?
Peter Coyne – If I have dreams about music I always try to turn them into a reality. I wanted to make a brilliant, kick ass, contemporary rock & roll album that was at least the equal to or better than what The Godfathers had released in the past & with the help of everyone else in the band we definitely achieved that with ‘Alpha Beta Gamma Delta’.
Your greek mini tour includes some smaller towns that you haven’t visited before. Do you expect a warm welcome from the fans?
I certainly hope so, I won’t be very happy if they throw rotten tomatoes at us! It’s always good to play somewhere new though & I’m sure it’s going to be great.
