Σε έναν κόσμο όπου το heavy metal δεν χρειάζεται πια να αποδείξει την αξία του, οι Praying Mantis επιστρέφουν για να μας θυμίσουν τι σημαίνει μελωδικό, τίμιο, «κατά ψυχή» metal. Έχοντας συμπληρώσει 50 χρόνια πορείας χωρίς ποτέ να γευτούν τις υπερβολές της φήμης ή του πλούτου οι Tino και Chris Troy αρνούνται να «γερνούν με χάρη». Αντιθέτως, συνεχίζουν απτόητοι, γεμάτοι ενέργεια, δημιουργικότητα και ένα πείσμα που αγγίζει τα όρια της Defiance, όπως και το τελευταίο τους άλμπουμ.
Στις 10 Οκτωβρίου, στο Death Disco, το Αθηναϊκό κοινό θα έχει την ευκαιρία να βιώσει μια νύχτα που υπόσχεται ένταση, νοσταλγία, αγάπη και ενέργεια όπως ακριβώς την περιγράφει ο ίδιος ο Tino στη συνέντευξη που παραχώρησε στη Χαρά Ευδαίμων για το RockinAthens . Από τον ανυποχώρητο ήχο τους στις αρχές των 80s μέχρι την ανθρωπιά που διαπνέει κάθε απάντησή τους, οι Praying Mantis αποδεικνύουν πως δεν είναι απλώς επιζώντες της NWOBHM σκηνής. Είναι δημιουργοί, παρατηρητές και πάνω απ’ όλα, πιστοί υπηρέτες της μουσικής. Και όπως λέει και το κομμάτι τους… Time Tells No Lies.
Καλώς ήρθες στο Rockinathens, Tino Troy! Πραγματικά χαίρομαι για αυτή τη συζήτηση. Λοιπόν… Μετά από 50 χρόνια στον χώρο, τι σε κρατάει ακόμα πεινασμένο να γράφεις μουσική αντί να ζεις απλώς με τη δόξα του παρελθόντος;
Γεια σου Chara & Rockinathens! Ανυπομονούμε για την επερχόμενη συναυλία μας στο Death Disco και δεν βλέπουμε την ώρα να σας δούμε εκεί. Ω ναι, μισός αιώνας είναι πολύς καιρός για να παραμένεις ενεργός στη μουσική, αλλά ποιες «δόξες» εννοείς; Δεν μας έφεραν ούτε δόξα ούτε πλούτη όπως συνέβη σε μερικούς από τους πιο γνωστούς αδελφούς μας εκείνης της εποχής. Πολλές φορές έχουμε σκεφτεί με τον Chris να αποσυρθούμε, να γερνάμε με χάρη… αλλά τελικά λέμε: «ας το κάνουμε χωρίς χάρη, χαχα!» Πάντα φαίνεται να υπάρχει ακόμα ένα άλμπουμ μέσα μας, και όσο έχουμε αυτό το δώρο και τη στήριξη των φίλων και των φαν μας παγκοσμίως, θα συνεχίζουμε. Ποιος ξέρει… ίσως οι δόξες να έρθουν τώρα!
Η NWOBHM ξεπήδησε μέσα από το χάος των late ‘70s. Ποιο κενό πιστεύεις ότι καλύπτει το heavy metal σήμερα;
Υπάρχουν τόσα διαφορετικά είδη μουσικής εκεί έξω σήμερα, αλλά πάντα θα υπάρχει χώρος για τους ροκάδες που θέλουν να ακούσουν heavy metal. Είναι απίστευτο που το New Wave of British Heavy Metal παραμένει δυνατό σχεδόν 50 χρόνια μετά. Είναι σαν στρατός!
Το Defiance ακούγεται σαν μανιφέστο. Ποιον ή τι αψηφάτε;
Έχει διπλή σημασία. Το κομμάτι «Defiance», που έγραψε ο Chris, δεν αναφέρει καν τη λέξη στους στίχους, αλλά είναι εμπνευσμένο από τη στάση της Ουκρανίας απέναντι στην εισβολή της Ρωσίας. Επίσης, παίζει και με την έννοια του να «αντιστέκεσαι στο πέρασμα του χρόνου» ότι οι Praying Mantis ακόμα ροκάρουν το 2025.
Παίζετε στην Αθήνα, στο Death Disco. Αν έπρεπε να γράψετε το soundtrack για μια αληθινή disco θάνατου, ποιο τραγούδι σας θα έβαζες πρώτο;
(γέλια) Όνομα περίεργο το Death Disco ελπίζω να είμαστε ζωντανοί στο τέλος της συναυλίας (γέλια) Θα ξεκινούσαμε με το χαρακτηριστικό μας τραγούδι, Praying Mantis Comiiing… time to die! Λίγο σκοτεινό, ναι, αλλά ταιριαστό!
Πες μας τα τρία βασικά συστατικά του DNA των Praying Mantis, για κάποιον που ακούει μόνο ραπ.
Πολύ δύσκολη ερώτηση! Θα έλεγα “Μελωδία, Ποίηση και Κομψότητα στη σύνθεση”. Και αν κάναμε ποτέ διασκευή σε ραπ, θα ήταν το “Gangsta’s Paradise” του Coolio!
Στην Ιαπωνία σας αντιμετωπίζουν σαν θεούς. Τι κάνουν οι Ιάπωνες fans που δεν κάνουν οι Ευρωπαίοι;
Για να πούμε την αλήθεια, οι φαν μας σε όλο τον κόσμο μας φέρονται το ίδιο. Έχουμε τον ίδιο αντίκτυπο παντού, και μας εμπνέουν όσο τους εμπνέουμε. Ελπίζουμε και οι Αθηναίοι να είναι εξίσου δυναμικοί!
Ποια είναι η πιο «αντι–ροκ σταρ» στιγμή της καριέρας σου, που δείχνει την αληθινή πλευρά πίσω από τη σκηνή;
Εύχομαι απλώς να μπορώ να συνεχίσω να παίζω κιθάρα όσο περισσότερο γίνεται. Έχω κάποια προβλήματα υγείας κώφωση, εμβοές, αρθρίτιδα, που μπορεί να με σταματήσουν ανά πάσα στιγμή. Είναι καταθλιπτικό, αλλά πρέπει να μένω θετικός. Υπάρχουν τόσοι που υποφέρουν άδικα στον κόσμο. Ποιος είμαι εγώ να παραπονιέμαι; Είμαι ευγνώμων για κάθε μέρα που ακόμα μπορώ να ακούω και να παίζω την κιθάρα μου. Ελπίζω να συνεχίσω για λίγα χρόνια ακόμα… όπως λέγαμε και το 1980: “Time Tells No Lies”.
Τα charts είναι νεκρά, το Spotify κυριαρχεί. Αν ξεκινούσατε σήμερα, πώς θα επιβίωνε το συγκρότημα;
Ο κόσμος της μουσικής είναι πλέον πολύ σκληρός και γεμάτος ανταγωνισμό. Το διαδίκτυο είναι τέλειο για να διαδοθεί η μουσική, αλλά σου στερεί τις ανταμοιβές. Πολλά παιδιά σήμερα δημιουργούν φανταστικά πράγματα, αλλά συχνά αναρωτιέσαι αν αυτό είναι αληθινό ταλέντο ή προϊόν μαθημάτων στο YouTube. Υπάρχουν οδηγοί για τα πάντα ακόμα και για το… πώς να σκουπίσεις τον κώλο σου! Τώρα με την τεχνητή νοημοσύνη, οι δυνατότητες είναι άπειρες. Δεν ξέρω πώς επιβιώνουμε ακόμα σαν μπάντα, αλλά κάτι κάνουμε σωστά. Οι άνθρωποι ακόμα αγαπούν τη μουσική μας, έρχονται στις συναυλίες, αγοράζουν τους δίσκους. Η μουσική μας είναι οργανική, βγαίνει από την καρδιά, την ψυχή και το μυαλό. Και είμαστε περήφανοι που έχουμε ωριμάσει και εξελιχθεί από τα 70s μέχρι σήμερα.
Ειλικρινά τώρα, έχεις ακόμα τρακ πριν από τις συναυλίες;
(γέλια) Παθαίνω τρακ όταν βλέπω κάποιες από τις σκηνές που παίζουμε τόσο μικρές που δεν μπορώ να τρέχω πάνω-κάτω! Μου αρέσει η «γυμναστική» στη σκηνή. Αλλά για να είμαι ειλικρινής, πάντα αγχώνομαι, είτε παίζουμε μπροστά σε 20 είτε σε 20.000 άτομα. Θέλουμε πάντα να δώσουμε τον καλύτερό μας εαυτό.
Η Αθήνα διαφημίζει τη συναυλία ως «μια νύχτα νοσταλγίας και έντασης». Αν έπρεπε να διαλέξεις, ποιο από τα δύο θα επέλεγες;
Θα έλεγα και τα δύο, είναι τέλεια περιγραφή! Θα προσθέταμε επίσης αγάπη, ενέργεια, ενθουσιασμό και απόλαυση. Θα είναι ηλεκτρισμένη ατμόσφαιρα και μια τρελή συναυλία ανυπομονούμε!
Και τέλος, αν οι Praying Mantis ήσασταν όντως έντομα που προσεύχονται, για τι θα προσευχόσασταν σήμερα;
Θα προσευχόμασταν να συνεχίσουμε να γράφουμε καλή μουσική για τους φίλους και φαν μας σε όλο τον κόσμο για λίγα ακόμα χρόνια. Και ελπίζουμε να βρούμε ειρήνη και αγάπη στη Γη… μέσω της μουσικής. Ευχαριστούμε και τα λέμε στις 10 Οκτωβρίου!

Welcome to Rockinathens Tino Troy! I’m really excited to have this conversation. So… After 50 years in the game, what still keeps you hungry to write instead of just living off the glory days?
Hello Chara & Rockinathens, We are looking forward to our up and coming show at Death Disco and can’t wait to see you there. Oh yes, half a century is a very long time to still be active in music but what are these glory days you talk about? They certainly didn’t bring us fame or fortune like some of our better known brothers from that era. There are many times when Chris and I have spoken about retiring Praying Mantis and thought about growing old gracefully but what the hell, let’s do it disgracefully, ha ha! There always seems to be another Album in us and while we still have that amazing gift and the support of our friends and fans everywhere, we shall carry on the way we are until who knows when. Maybe those elusive glory days are still to come!
NWOBHM rose from the chaos of the late ’70s. What void do you think heavy music fills today?
There are so many alternative genres of music in existence these days, but there’s always room for the rockers amongst us to enjoy a bit of heavy metal. It’s hard to believe the New Wave of British Heavy Metal is still a powerful element after nearly 50 years and it shows with the amount of ardent fans there are worldwide. Like an army!
Defiance sounds like a manifesto. Who or what are you defying?
In this instance it has a double meaning. Initially, the song ‘Defiance’ on the album – which was written by Chris – incidentally doesn’t mention the word “Defiance” once in the lyric but it was written about the defiant stance of Ukraine against the Russian invasion. We also thought that it would be a nice play on the word to have defied the test of time and for Praying Mantis to still be rocking in 2025
You’re playing Athens at a venue called Death Disco. If you had to soundtrack a real “death disco,” which of your songs would kick things off?
Ha ha, I know, it’s a strange name, Death Disco and hope we’re still alive at the end of our show there (Laughts). The song we choose shall probably be our signature tune, Praying Mantis comiiing.. time to die! A bit doom and gloom, I guess but appropriate nonetheless!
Break down the DNA of Praying Mantis for someone who only listens to rap what three elements define you?
Wow, that’s a difficult question! I guess it would have to be Melody Poetry and Classy songwriting. And if Mantis were ever to do a rap style cover it would have to be Coolio’s, ‘Gangsta’s Paradise’
Japan treats you like gods. What do Japanese fans do that European fans just… don’t?
To be truthful, our fans from all over the world treat us the same. We have the same effect wherever we play and the fans inspire us as much as we do them. We hope that our fans in Athens will be a loud bunch too!
What’s been the most anti–rock star moment of your career something that shows the real life behind the curtain?
I just pray that I can continue as a guitarist for as long as I am able. I have some health woes like Deafness, Tinnitus and Arthritis that could end my musical career at any time. This can be hugely depressing but I have to stay positive. After all, there is so much needless suffering in this world, so many helpless souls that are affected by famine, disease and war so who am I to complain. I am therefore grateful for each day that passes, I can still play and hear my guitar. I hope to get a few more years in but as they say, or rather, we did in 1980… “Time Tells No Lies”
Charts are dead, Spotify rules. If you were starting out today, how would Praying Mantis survive?
It’s a tough world out there now and there’s so much competition too. The Internet has been amazing to get your music heard all over the world and put your band on the map but it also robs you of the rewards you deserve after so many years in the game. Some of the kids out there today are coming up with some amazing stuff but you can’t help wondering if this is natural talent or is it nurtured from sites like YouTube where there are lessons for this, lessons for that, mastery methods for Guitar for singing for how to wipe your ass, you name it it’s on there and accessible to everyone, even pre-recorded loops that can be doctored to write your own songs. And now, with the advent of AI, the possibilities are endless. I don’t know how we still exist as a band to be honest but we seem to be doing something right because people still love and appreciate our music, they come to our shows and buy our records (young people too) so we can only be grateful of that. Let’s just say that our music is organic. It’s from the heart, the soul and the mind and I’m happy that we have matured as musicians and have grown our music from the early 70s through the 80s jumping on that NWOBHM train to Whereverland!
Be honest do you still get stage fright?
Ha ha ha I get stage fright when I see some of the stages we have to play. Sometimes they are so small that I cannot run around. I do like a bit of a workout on stage so thankfully most stages are accommodating enough for my antics. And to be perfectly honest, I always get nervous whatever the size of the gig we play be it 20 or 20,000 people. We all want to do our best and put on the greatest show for our fans
Athens is billing this as “a night of nostalgia and intensity.” Which would you choose nostalgia or intensity?
I would say both of those words are great description of what is to come. There are also a few others we could include like love, energy, excitement and enjoyment. It’s gonna be electric and one hell of a show and we can’t wait!!
And finally if Praying Mantis were truly the insect that prays, what would you be praying for right now?
We just pray that we can continue to produce fine music for our friends and fans around the world for a few more years and hope that we can find peace and love on Earth through music. Thanks nd see you on the 10th October!
