Οι Paleface Swiss, όπως μαρτυράει και το όνομά τους, μας έρχονται από την Ελβετία και έκαναν τα πρώτα τους βήματα πριν από περίπου μία δεκαετία, χτίζοντας μεθοδικά το όνομά τους στο underground. Από τις πρώτες, πιο άγουρες κυκλοφορίες μέχρι σήμερα, σε κάθε νέο τους βήμα φαίνεται ξεκάθαρα η πρόοδος, τόσο σε επίπεδο σύνθεσης όσο και σε ταυτότητα. Δεν είναι τυχαίο ότι όλο και περισσότεροι τους δείχνουν με το δάχτυλο ως το next big thing του μοντέρνου ακραίου ήχου. Και σαν να μην τους έφτανε η ένταση της τελευταίας τους ολοκληρωμένης δουλειάς, η τετραμελής παρέα επιστρέφει λίγους μόνο μήνες μετά, για να μας παρουσιάσει το νέο EP, αποδεικνύοντας ότι βρίσκονται σε δημιουργικό οίστρο.
Το “The Wilted” αποτελείται από πέντε κομμάτια, με το πρώτο να λειτουργεί ως ένα ολιγόλεπτο intro που σε βάζει αργά αλλά απειλητικά στο κλίμα. Η ουσία όμως ξεκινάει κατευθείαν με το “Withering Flower”: nu metal riff που σε αρπάζει από το γιακά, γαυγίσματα α λα Corey Taylor από τον Marc “Zelli” Zellweger και ένα άκρως catchy refrain που καρφώνεται στο μυαλό από το πρώτο άκουσμα. Στη συνέχεια, το “Let Me Sleep” ανεβάζει τον δείκτη της επιθετικότητας στο κόκκινο, προσφέροντας την πιο ακραία στιγμή του EP. Ασταμάτητο groove, ισοπεδωτικό drumming και έντονα beatdown hardcore στοιχεία προσθέτουν έξτρα βάρος στο κομμάτι. Για το επόμενο track, οι Paleface επιστρατεύουν τον Jesse Barnett των Stick To Your Guns και το αποτέλεσμα είναι μία από τις καλύτερες συνθέσεις που έχουν σκαρφιστεί μέχρι σήμερα. Και ενώ μέχρι εκείνη τη στιγμή μας είχα πάει τρένο, στο τέλος φροντίζουν να ρίξουν τους παλμούς με ένα πιο μελωδικό τραγούδι, όπου τα καθαρά φωνητικά αναλαμβάνουν δράση και δείχνουν μια άλλη, πιο ευάλωτη πλευρά της μπάντας.
Η μουσική των Paleface Swiss έχει εικόνισμα τα δύο πρώτα Slipknot, τόσο φωνητικά όσο και μουσικά, το οποίο έχουν παντρέψει με hardcore και deathcore στοιχεία. Το αποτέλεσμα είναι απολύτως πειστικό και καθόλου επιφανειακό. Το “The Wilted” δεν είναι απλώς ένα “ενδιάμεσο” EP, αλλά μια συμπαγής και ουσιαστική δήλωση που επιβεβαιώνει ότι το συγκρότημα βρίσκεται σε ανοδική πορεία και έχει ακόμη πολλά να πει.

Paleface Swiss, as their name suggests, hail from Switzerland and took their first steps about a decade ago, methodically building their reputation within the underground. From their early, more immature releases to the present day, each new move clearly showcases their progress, both in terms of songwriting and identity. It’s no coincidence that more and more people are pointing to them as the next big thing in modern extreme music. And as if the intensity of their latest full-length wasn’t enough, the four-piece return just a few months later with a new EP, proving that they’re currently in a serious creative surge.
The Wilted consists of five tracks, with the first functioning as a brief intro that slowly but ominously draws you into the atmosphere. The real substance begins immediately with “Withering Flower”: a nu metal riff that grabs you by the collar, Corey Taylor–style barking vocals from Marc “Zelli” Zellweger, and an extremely catchy refrain that sticks in your head from the very first listen. Next up, “Let Me Sleep” pushes the aggression meter into the red, delivering the most extreme moment of the EP. Relentless groove, crushing drumming, and strong beatdown hardcore elements add extra weight to the track. For the following song, Paleface enlist Jesse Barnett of Stick To Your Guns, and the result is one of the best compositions they’ve come up with to date. And while up to that point they’ve been going full throttle, they make sure to bring the heart rate down at the end with a more melodic song, where clean vocals take the lead and reveal a different, more vulnerable side of the band.
The music of Paleface Swiss draws heavily from the first two Slipknot albums, both vocally and musically, blending that influence with hardcore and deathcore elements. The result is fully convincing and anything but superficial. The Wilted is not just an “in-between” EP, but a solid and meaningful statement that confirms the band is on an upward trajectory and still has plenty more to say.
