Tο 2004, στο Μάλμε της Σουηδίας, τέσσερις μουσικοί ένωσαν το πάθος τους για τη μουσική και δημιούργησαν τους Deville, ένα heavy rock συγκρότημα που με το πέρασμα του χρόνου κατάφερε να ξεχωρίσει για την ακατανίκητη ενέργεια και τη χαρακτηριστική του ταυτότητα. Φέτος, οι Deville γιορτάζουν 20 χρόνια πορείας με μια ειδική επέτειο και ένα μοναδικό live που θα πραγματοποιηθεί την Παρασκευή 31 Ιανουαρίου 2025, στη σκηνή του An Club στην Αθήνα. Με αφορμή αυτή την ξεχωριστή βραδιά, η Χαρά Ευδαίμων είχε την ευκαιρία να μιλήσει με τον τραγουδιστή και κιθαρίστα του συγκροτήματος, Andy, για την πορεία τους, τις στιγμές που καθόρισαν τη μουσική τους ταυτότητα και για όλα όσα μας επιφυλάσσουν σε αυτή τη heavy rock γιορτή.
Καλώς ήρθες στο Rockinathens, Andy! Είναι υπέροχο που σας έχουμε μαζί μας. Ας γυρίσουμε πίσω στο 2004. Τι οδήγησε στη δημιουργία των Deville; Υπήρχε κάποια συγκεκριμένη έμπνευση ή στόχος που θέλατε να πετύχετε;
Σας ευχαριστούμε πολύ που μας φιλοξενείτε! Η μπάντα ξεκίνησε εμπνευσμένη από καλλιτέχνες όπως οι Soundgarden, QOTSA, Kyuss και Sabbath. Αναζητούσαμε κάτι που να μας εκφράζει, με τη σωστή ισορροπία βαρύτητας. Με μερικά από τα ιδρυτικά μέλη παίζαμε ήδη σε τοπικές ροκ μπάντες από τις αρχές του 2000, και τελικά βρήκαμε τη μουσική ταυτότητα που θέλαμε.
Έχετε περάσει μέσα από διάφορα μουσικά είδη, από το stoner rock μέχρι το κλασικό metal. Πώς αποφασίζετε την κατεύθυνση κάθε νέου άλμπουμ;
Δεν θέλουμε ποτέ να επαναλαμβανόμαστε. Κατά τη διάρκεια των ετών, έχουμε αλλάξει επιρροές και κατευθύνσεις πολλές φορές. Για εμάς, αυτό κρατά τη διαδικασία δημιουργίας ενδιαφέρουσα. Παρ’ όλα αυτά, προσπαθούμε πάντα να διατηρούμε τον «ήχο μας». Πολλοί θέλουν να μας κατατάξουν σε ένα συγκεκριμένο είδος, αλλά πάντα ήμασταν κάπως τα «μαύρα πρόβατα», για καλό και για κακό.
Υπάρχουν συγκεκριμένες ιστορίες ή γεγονότα που έχουν επηρεάσει τους στίχους σας;
Πάντα πίστευα ότι ο στίχος πρέπει να υποστηρίζει το riff. Εμπνέομαι πολύ από συγγραφείς όπως ο Chris Cornell. Ο τρόπος που γράφει μεταφορικά, μετατρέποντας τις ιστορίες σε κάτι μεγαλύτερο και πιο δυνατό, είναι για εμένα πρότυπο. Δεν λέω ότι το πετυχαίνω πάντα, αλλά μου αρέσει αυτός ο τρόπος γραφής.
Ποιο άλμπουμ θεωρείτε το πιο καθοριστικό για την πορεία σας και γιατί; Πώς επηρέασαν άλμπουμ όπως το “Hydra” και το “Make It Belong To Us” τον ήχο σας;
Το “Hydra” είναι σίγουρα το πιο καθοριστικό για εμάς. Βάλαμε πολλή δουλειά και προσπάθεια, και ακόμα το αγαπάμε. Ήταν ένα βήμα μπροστά για τη μπάντα, και δημιουργήθηκε με την ιδέα ότι θέλαμε τραγούδια που να λειτουργούν καλά στις ζωντανές εμφανίσεις. Είχαμε ήδη περιοδεύσει πολύ εκείνη την περίοδο, και πήραμε έμπνευση από τις εμπειρίες μας για να γράψουμε πιο άμεσα κομμάτια.
Το “Pigs With Gods” σηματοδότησε μια στροφή προς έναν πιο κλασικό metal ήχο. Τι σας οδήγησε να απομακρυνθείτε από το doom/stoner στυλ;
Θέλαμε να κάνουμε κάτι διαφορετικό και είχαμε τον χρόνο να το δουλέψουμε στο στούντιο. Όπως πάντα, προσπαθήσαμε να δημιουργήσουμε ένα μουσικό ταξίδι. Αυτή τη φορά αφήσαμε τις επιρροές από μπάντες όπως οι Mastodon και Entombed να φανούν περισσότερο.
Έχετε δώσει πάνω από 500 συναυλίες σε πολλές χώρες. Υπάρχει κάποια συγκεκριμένη εμφάνιση ή φεστιβάλ που ξεχωρίζει για εσάς και γιατί;
Η περσινή περιοδεία μας στην Αυστραλία ήταν μοναδική. Την περιμέναμε καιρό και είχε ιδιαίτερη σημασία για εμάς. Επίσης, θυμόμαστε πάντα την πρώτη μας διεθνή περιοδεία και την πρώτη φορά που παίξαμε σε ένα γεμάτο κλαμπ στη γενέτειρά μας, το Μάλμε.
Έχετε μοιραστεί τη σκηνή με καλλιτέχνες όπως οι Red Fang, Torche και Sepultura. Πώς ήταν η εμπειρία αυτών των συνεργασιών;
Ήταν μεγάλη τιμή να υποστηρίξουμε τους Torche και Red Fang στη Σουηδία. Ήταν μια περίοδος που ταίριαζε στιλιστικά, και οι εμφανίσεις ήταν φανταστικές. Ήταν επίσης υπέροχα παιδιά.
Ποια ήταν τα αγαπημένα σας άλμπουμ που ακούσατε φέτος, ανεξαρτήτως είδους;
Δεν ακούω πολλή μουσική από το είδος μας, αλλά προτιμώ να εξερευνώ παλιότερες δουλειές. Τελευταία ακούω πολύ Type O Negative και βρετανική indie μουσική.
Το τελευταίο σας άλμπουμ σηματοδοτεί την απίστευτη 20ή επέτειο των Deville. Πώς αντικατοπτρίζει αυτός ο δίσκος την πορεία σας και τι μπορούν να περιμένουν οι θαυμαστές;
Περιλαμβάνει τραγούδια από όλα μας τα άλμπουμ (εκτός από ένα) και καλύπτει τη δισκογραφία μας πολύ καλά. Επιπλέον, υπάρχουν δύο νέα κομμάτια.
Το άλμπουμ περιλαμβάνει μια διασκευή του “The Hand That Feeds” των Nine Inch Nails. Πώς προσεγγίσατε αυτό το κομμάτι;
Θέλαμε να δημιουργήσουμε κάτι που να ταιριάζει στο δικό μας ύφος, διατηρώντας όμως την ουσία του πρωτότυπου. Πιστεύουμε ότι η διασκευή αυτή τα καταφέρνει και προσθέτει μια διαφορετική διάσταση στη δισκογραφία μας.
Όταν κοιτάτε πίσω στις δύο τελευταίες δεκαετίες, ποια επιτεύγματα ξεχωρίζετε;
Κάθε εποχή έχει τα highlights της. Η πρώτη περιοδεία στο εξωτερικό, οι συναυλίες στην Ιταλία, ακόμα και οι δυσκολίες που ξεπεράσαμε. Το γεγονός ότι είμαστε ακόμα ενεργοί είναι από μόνο του ένα μεγάλο επίτευγμα.
Ποιο είναι το κύριο μήνυμα που θέλετε να περάσετε μέσα από τη μουσική σας;
Ένα βαρύ riff και ένα βαρύ ταξίδι!
Την Παρασκευή, 31 Ιανουαρίου 2025, γιορτάζετε τα 20 χρόνια σας ως μπάντα με μια ειδική εμφάνιση στην Αθήνα, στο An Club. Τι μπορούμε να περιμένουμε από αυτή τη βραδιά;
Θα είναι μια ξεχωριστή νύχτα γεμάτη ενέργεια. Ετοιμάζουμε ένα setlist που θα ικανοποιήσει όλους, και ανυπομονούμε να ξαναπαίξουμε στην Αθήνα.

Welcome to Rockinathens guys! It’s great having you around. Let’s go back to 2004. What led to the creation of the band Deville? Was there any specific inspiration or goal you aimed to achieve?
Thank you very much and thank you for having us!
It started out being inspired by bands like Soundgarden,QOTSA, Kyuss, Sabbath etc. Was searching something that felt good in the right way of heaviness after playing with some of the founding members in different local rock constellations since early 2000.
You have transitioned through various genres, from stoner rock to classic metal. How do you decide on the direction of each new album?
I think we don´t want to do the same album twice and during the years we changed influences and directions many times as you say. For us I think it is to keep it interesting. But also keeping ”our sound”. Many people want to label us and put us in this type of genre but we always been kind of black sheep because of this for the good and bad.
Are there specific stories or events that have influenced your lyrics?
I always thought that the lyric should help the riff and am very inspired by writers like Chris Cornell. The way he writes metaphorically, to try to paint it all in other words to make the story more powerful or bigger. Not saying that I manage that all the time but I like that way of buliding it.
Which album do you consider the most defining for your journey and why? How did albums like “Hydra” and “Make It Belong To Us” influence your sound?
I would say ”Hydra” since we put so much effort into it and I still like it a lot. It meant alot to us and we took a step forward there with that record. It was created with a vision that we wanted to do a record that works live. We had toured alot for five-six years there before and took the experience from that what we thought worked live in our set and tried to write these kind of more direct songs.
“Pigs With Gods” marked a shift towards a more classic metal sound. What drove you to move away from the doom/stoner style?
Again we wanted to do something different and we had time to spend in the studio. We wanted it to be a journey, as all of our records, but sometime you have more time to put on it like on this record. We also let the influences from bands like Mastodon and Entombed shine through more.
You’ve performed over 500 concerts in many countries. Is there a particular performance or festival that stands out for you, and why?
Our Australian tour last year was great in so many ways finally being able to do it but doing the first tour abroad was a big thing and playing a packed club in Malmö (our home town) the first time are memorable shows.
You’ve shared the stage with artists like Red Fang, Torche, and Sepultura. What was your experience collaborating with these acts?
We are really glad that we got the opportunity to support Torche and Red Fang in Sweden when they toured together here since Torche called it a day some years after. Stylewise it fit us perfect and the shows were great as the guys in the bands.
What have been your favourite records that you’ve heard this year. Regardless of any genre.
I listen very little to bands in the “genre” and actually listen to so much older music and find so much good there so it is very hard to list a new really good one for 2024. Lately I listen to Type O Negative and british indie a lot.
Your latest album marks an incredible 20-year anniversary for Deville. How does this record reflect the band’s journey over the past two decades, and what can fans expect from this milestone release?
We took the songs that meant something to us along the way and what songs stood out on our records basically. There are songs from all of our records except for one so it covers our catalogue quite good. And two new ones of course!
The album includes a cover of “The Hand That Feeds” by Nine Inch Nails. What drew you to this song, and how did you approach putting your own spin on such an iconic track?
We never managed to get it to work with a cover earlier but now we finally saw a good chance with this type of release and wanted to have song where we could do it our way but also keep the essence of the original song. A cover song that should work with my vocals and also be different from our own style but that we though we could arrange in good way. The song has always been around as a cover option for us but now was the time right.
When you look back on the last two decades, what moments or achievements stand out as the most defining for Deville?
Every era of the band has its highlights so first just to get a release out and get to do a tour abroad was huge almost 20 years ago but later on trying to take steps forward as we grew as a band. Doing the US but to be honest first time in Italy was better. But for us I think that we are still around is becasue we never done anything we didn´t want to do. Trying always to make decisions that are for the right reasons for us. That is one of our bigger achievements.
What is the main message you want to convey through your music?
A heavy riff and a heavy journey!
We have kept the date! On Friday, January 31, 2025, you’re celebrating 20 years as a band with a special show in Athens, at An club. What can we expect from this night?
There have been some logistics to get this show to work so now when we finally have it set we have big expectations that it will be great night with the other bands and the crowd. We are celebrating 20 years as a band and that is one of the reasons we wanted to try to come back and do shows where we haven´t been in a while. We will do the best set we have so we hopefully leave the crowd hungry for more so it doesn´t take 9 years to come back to Greece again.
What message would you like to share with your fans who have supported you throughout this journey?
We are of course very grateful for those who have done that and it means a lot to us. Hope you like the ”20 YEARS” record and hope to see you this year at our shows. We have some shows coming up…
