Πριν λίγους μήνες κυκλοφορήσατε το νέο σας album, “Outsider”. Ο τίτλος που διαλέξατε είναι αντιπροσωπευτικός για τους εαυτούς σας ή σχετίζεται με τη θεματολογία των στίχων του δίσκου;
Πως ήταν η διαδικασία δημιουργίας του album; Υπήρξαν διαφορές σε σχέση με τη διαδικασία που ακολουθήσατε στο προκάτοχό του, “Die Knowing”;
Σε τρία κομμάτια του “Outsider” συμμετέχουν και οι Devin Townsend, Chris Cresswell και Northcote. Πως προέκυψαν αυτές οι συνεργασίες;
Με ποιον άλλον καλλιτέχνη θα θέλατε να συνεργαστείτε σε κάποια μελλοντική σας κυκλοφορία;
Ίσως μια συνεργασία με τον Tommy O’Dell από τους DMA’s ή τον Freddy Cricien των Madball.
Έχετε ήδη κυκλοφορήσει τρία καινούρια video clips. Να περιμένουμε κι άλλο; Και αν ναι, σε ποιο κομμάτι;
Ναι, δουλεύουμε στα video clips των “Outsider” και “I’ll Be That”.
Υπάρχει κάποια σύνθεση από το “Outsider” που να τη θεωρείτε αντιπροσωπευτικό δείγμα του δίσκου;
Πόσο σημαντικό βήμα για τη καριέρα σας πιστεύετε ότι είναι η ενσωμάτωσή σας στη Nuclear Blast;
Υπάρχει κάτι στη σημερινή hardcore σκηνή που να σας ενοχλεί;
***ENGLISH VERSION:***
Hello Andrew and welcome to Rockin’Athens! A few months ago you released your new album, “Outsider”. The title you’ve chosen represents you as personalities or is it related to the lyrics of the songs?
It’s related to the title track “Outsider”. It’s about new ideas and realities that are too often pushed aside and seen as irrelevant or even blasphemous. It’s about harnessing the truths that you believe in and trying to progress our mindsets into a new more accepting world.
Tell us a few words about the creation process of your album. Were there differences in the process that you followed compared to your previous album “Die Knowing”?
We all live in different cities. Winnipeg, Vancouver, and Toronto. So as usual we would meet up in one week ( or so ) blocks and one of us at a time would bring song ideas to the table, and we would usually hammer out the song structures together. Then sit on it for awhile, go on tour, or go home, and have time to reflect on each session and come back with a fresh take on what the song is about and revise them and make them better. Usually whoever wrote the majority of the song would be the “boss” of the song and really see it through. I always wait to the final hours to write the lyrics but my patterns and melodies come almost immediately in the writing process so its about seeing those parts through and making them better.
Devin Townsend, Chris Cresswell and Northcote appear in three songs in this album. Tell us a few things about these collaborations.
“Absolute”: we had a part in this song that I was kinda doing strapping young lad vocal rip off anyways, so we thought why not get the real deal Devin to do the part for us. We have worked with him on other projects before so it was cool of him to agree to do it and bring the song to the next level.
“Consumed the Vision”: Bit more of a poppy hardcore song and I needed a voice I could harmonize to that was in a lower register but still sounding aggressive. Chris lives in Toronto where I reside and I knew he would be perfect for the song. A few beers and a couple hours at the studio and we hammered it out.
“Moment in Time”: we had a corner of the bar, moody, intro type song so i needed a Johnny Cash / Tom Waits voice and Northcote provided that for us.
Which artists would you like to collaborate with in the future?
Maybe get a cheeky feature from Tommy from the DMA’s or Freddy Madball.
You have already made three video clips for the songs “Somewhere, Somehow”, “Hell of a Scene” and “Surrender Control”. Are there going to be more video clips?
Yeah we are working on videos for “Outsider” and “I’ll be That”.
Is there one particular song from the “Outsider” that you consider it to be a representative sample of the whole album?
I usually show people “Absolute”, “Surrender Control”, or “Somewhere, Somehow”…
How important, do you think, it is for your future career that you signed with Νuclear Βlast?
We want longevity as a band, they have proved themselves as a label that has staying power. We will make it work and we hope they can help us sustain while bringing us to the next level.
Is there anything in the hardcore scene nowadays that bothers you?
The “fuck you horseshoe” that you see at a lot of shows when no one wants to stand in the front of the audience and rather create a U on the side walls and standing in the back in a full room. That looks weird.
