Οι People As Places As People είναι ένα instrumental post-rock συγκρότημα από την Αγγλία που εντυπωσίασε το Βασίλη Λύτρα μετά και την κυκλοφορία του ντεμπούτο EP τους. Διαβάστε παρακάτω τη συνομιλία του με τον κιθαρίστα της μπάντας, Cai Sumption, σχετικά με τη δημιουργία των People As Places As People, τις μουσικές τους επιρροές, αλλά και τη σκηνή της πόλης της.
Καλησπέρα παιδιά και καλώς ορίσατε στο Rockin’Athens! Πως είστε αυτές τις μέρες;
Μπορείς να μας πεις την ιστορία των People As Places As People; Πως γνωριστήκατε; Πως αποφασίσατε να φτιάξετε την μπάντα;
Λοιπόν, τον Φεβρουάριο κυκλοφόρησε το ντεμπούτο EP σας “For the Time Being”. Ποιά ήταν η ανταπόκριση που λάβατε;
Ειλικρινά, ξαφνιαστήκαμε από την ανταπόκριση που γνώρισε το “For the Time Being”, ειδικά εάν αναλογιστούμε και το γεγονός πως για κάποιο διάστημα δεν μπορούσαμε να κάνουμε live εμφανίσεις.
Μπορείς να μας πεις για την διαδικασία δημιουργίας του album; Πως δουλεύει η μπάντα κατά την διάρκεια των ηχογραφήσεων;
Το “For the Time Being” ηχογράφησε, μίξαρε και έκανε master ο Bob Cooper στα HQ Studios του Μάντσεστερ, πίσω στο καλοκαίρι του 2013.
Πως θα περιγράφατε την διαδικασία δημιουργίας των κομματιών;
Τα κομμάτια που παρουσιάζουμε στο “For the Time Being”, ξεκίνησαν ως τζαμαρίσματα σε πρόβες μας, εξελίχθηκαν στα live μας και τελειοποιήθηκαν στο studio.
Πως θα περιέγραφες την μουσική σας;
Ποιές μπάντες και ποιοί καλλιτέχνες σας έχουν επηρρεάσει μουσικά;
Αρχίσαμε να έχουμε μια πιο instrumental κατεύθυνση, όταν ο drummer μας ο Sam, μου έμαθε τους For A Minor Reflection, κάποια στιγμή το 2011. Black Emperor.
Πρόκειται η παραγωγή του “For the Time Being” για μια εντελώς D.I.Y. παραγωγή;
Ποιά η άποψή σας πάνω στο D.I.Y.;
Η φιλοσοφία του D.I.Y. To “For the Time Being”, φέρει το artwork του Ryan Aylsworth, ενός φωτογράφου από την Νέα Υόρκη, του οποίου δουλειές θα συναντήσουμε – μεταξύ άλλων – στα, “Sunbather” των Deafheaven και “Is Survived By” των Touché Amoré’s. Το βινύλιο του “For the Time Being” κυκλοφορεί από την δική μας “δισκογραφική” Pedal Pusher Records, που “τρέχω” από το δωμάτιο μου στο Γιορκ.
Ποιές είναι οι βασικές δυσκολίες που αντιμετωπίζει μια Βρετανική μπάντα σήμερα;
Πως είναι η εκεί μουσική σκηνή;
Ποιά η άποψή σου για το post-rock στις μέρες μας;
Μπορείς να μας πεις τρεις δίσκους που έχουν συμβάλλει στον ήχο των People As Places As People;
Εάν έπρεπε να διαλεξω τρεις δίσκους που έχουν συμβάλλει στον ήχο του “For the Time Being”, αυτοί μάλλον θα ήταν οι: “White Album” από τους Beatles, o “Lift Your Skinny Fists Like Antennas to Heaven” των Godspeed You! Black Emperor και το “Sunbather” των Deafheaven.
Ποιό είναι το μεγαλύτερό – ίσως και λίγο τρελό – σας όνειρο;
Ποιά είναι τα μελόντικα σχέδια των People As Places As People;
***ENGLISH VERSION:***
Hello guys and welcome to Rockin’Athens! How are you doin’ these days?
We’re doing good, thanks for having us!
Please, tell us the history of People As Places As People! How did you guys meet? Why did you decide to form a band?
We met back in secondary school and formed the band for the same reason most bored teenagers form bands; it looked like a lot of fun.
So, back in February, your debut EP “For the Time Being” was released.
What’s the response to the album, until now?
We’ve honestly been blown away by the response to the record, especially considering we’ve not been in the position to perform live for a while now.
Will you please tell us about the making of of the album? How does a recording session usually works for the band?
“For the Time Being” was recorded, mixed and mastered by Manchester-based producer Bob Cooper at HQ Studios across the summer and autumn of 2013. Tracking took eight sessions in total; the first to lay down guide tracks for each song before recording drums, the second for bass, the third for Cameron’s guitar parts and the final five for my guitar parts and overdubs.
How would you describe the process of making it?
The tracks present on “For the Time Being” each started life as rehearsal jams that gradually evolved over the course of numerous live performances before being finalised in the studio. Working with Bob was an absolute pleasure, his input as a producer influenced not only the record’s sound, but also the composition of the material.
How would you describe your music?
If I had to describe the music on “For the Time Being” it would be honest. It’s an accurate snapshot of where we were musically at that point in time.
Which bands and artists influence you directly as musicians?
Cameron and I started playing guitar together in our early teens over a mutual love for The Beatles, so to discuss the band’s influences without mentioning them would be a crime. The band began to head in more of an instrumental direction after our drummer Sam introduced me to For A Minor Reflection sometime in 2011. Other bands worth noting would probably include Deafheaven, Swans and Godspeed You! Black Emperor.
Is the production of the album completely D.I.Y?
Bob is a freelance producer who works almost exclusively with DIY bands, so I guess so!
How do you feel about D.I.Y. philosophy?
D.I.Y. philosophy has been at the core of pretty much everything the band has accomplished to date. Our rehearsal space was built from the ground up by our drummer Sam and I’ve been in charge of managing, promoting and booking shows for the band since day one. I’ve learnt through being in this band that it often pays to be ambitious. A lot of the time you don’t need a manager to make cool stuff happen, you just need an email address. “For the Time Being” features artwork by New York photographer Ryan Aylsworth, whose photography can be found on Deafheaven’s “Sunbather” and Touché Amoré’s “Is Survived By” among others, and our shirts were designed by Mariano Sánchez García who’s designed merchandise for bands such as Russian Circles and Marriages. Both mean a great deal to me and were made possible simply by sending an email. The EP was released on vinyl through the band’s self-run label Pedal Pusher Records, currently operating out of my bedroom in York.
What are the main difficulties that a British band is facing these days?
Given the current financial crisis in the UK, many live music venues across the country are being forced to close. This is in turn impacting bands looking for somewhere to play.
How is the music scene over there?
The majority of our shows have been in Leeds, whose scene is diverse and booming despite various venue closures. However most of the band are currently at university in York, whose scene isn’t quite as active as Leeds’.
What is your opinion about post-rock scene nowadays?
What I admire most about the post-rock scene is it’s international scope, there’s a lot of fantastic bands from all over the globe. We’ve found that our music has taken off more in Europe and the US than it has in the UK.
Please name 3 albums which have contributed to the sound of People As Places As People…
That’s a tough one! If I had to pick three records that contributed to the sound of “For the Time Being” they would probably be The Beatles’ “White Album”, Godspeed You! Black Emperor’s “Lift Your Skinny Fists Like Antennas to Heaven” and Deafheaven’s “Sunbather”.
What’s the biggest (and craziest) dream as a band?
I don’t know how crazy it is, but there’s a math & post-rock oriented festival in Bristol we all love called ArcTangent. It would be pretty cool to play there at some point.
What does the future hold for People As Places As People?
We haven’t played for a while, so that’s first on the list! Maybe a tour before hopefully writing and recording a debut LP.
So, that’s all from me guys, thanks for your time! Last words are yours!
It’s been a pleasure, thanks again for having us!
